A. Read the article below. It is in six parts. Choose the sentence (A-G) that summarizes what each part is about (6x2:12p)
A. There is a link between computer games and crime.
B. The brain can be affected, too.
C. Weight problems are another result.
D. Girl's father is also blamed.
E. Playing computer games can actually hurt you.
F. Why are younger people getting weaker?
G. The health of teenagers causes concern in two countries.
1
Newspapers in Japan recently reported that standard tests show that the average Japanese teenager is 'significantly weaker than the average teenager forty years ago ‘ Almost exactly at the same time newspapers in England carried similar stories about the identical age-group in Britain.
2
In both countries, the same four things were identified as the causes. The first was too much television. The second was too much convenience food and the third was not enough exercise. However, the fourth cause - computer games - was the focus of more comment in Britain than Japan.
3
One London newspaper reported that a boy of 12 had become so obsessed with various computer games that he stole from his parents and his schoolmates in order to buy more. This is not the only such case. The head of a primary school recently claimed that many of the children at his school steal each other's lunch money for the same reason.
4
Dr Leonora Keller, a health expert, said that many children play these games with such enthusiasm that they suffer from 'Space Warrior's Wrist’. The muscles of the lower arm become inflamed as a result of repeated movements of the wrist and constant pressure on the computer control stick. This also causes other aches and pains in their elbows and shoulders as well as strange sores on their hands.
5
Dr Keller has also found that children who spend a lot of time playing electronic games have a tendency to be fatter than those who do not. She said that 'for some reason these children tend to eat more sugar and fat’ and that 'many of them get too little exercise to burn up these things’.
6
Another alarming problem was recently reported in the British Medical Journal. A 17-year-old girl spent hours playing computer games every day. Her father repaired computers and she took games from his workshop. One day she suddenly fell to the floor and began to jerk about wildly. The doctors who treated her found that she was suffering from an unusual form of epilepsy. The attack was caused by the signals on the computer screen blinking at a particular frequency.
B- Read the interview with Mitchell Fossett and fill in the gaps with questions. (10p).
1. How did you meet your knife-throwing partner?
2. Did you have any accidents in those ten years?
3. How did you become a knife throwers partner?
And complete the sentences
1. We know her father was a good knife thrower because he _______________________.
2. She had to do the show so she _______________________________.
a) ___________________________?
I was born into the circus. My Dad was a knife thrower and my mum was his assistant. One day Mum couldn’t assist him, so I did. I didn’t have to, it was my decision. This was when I was 12. Dad never hit me or my mum – he was very good.
b) ___________________________?
I met him at my uncle’s circus. He wanted to be knife thrower and he needed an assistant. We had to practice for hours every day. But it was fantastic to hear our first audience go “Ooh!” The last part of the act was throwing six knives on fire. The audience really loved that.
Over ten years ago we worked out that, in the first ten years of our act, my partner threw 195,200 knives at me!
c) ___________________________?
Yes, when he tried to throw the knives too close together. He hit me three times –in the leg, in the arm and the top of my head! But I couldn’t go to the doctor’s because I had to do the next show. That’s what circus people do – the show must go on.
He didn’t say sorry, but then he never apologizes! I got really angry about that and we had a big argument – but after the show, not in front of the audience. That’s unprofessional.
It’s the same that being the assistant or the thrower. If something goes wrong, we both feel really bad! But I love the excitement. It’s wonderful when 500 people are watching me and I’m making them happy
