NEW CLUES TO THE ALZHEİMER’S

Alzheimer’s disease is slowly robbing 4 million Americans of dignity. The victims are usually elderly, but when a family has an Alzheimer’s gene, the disease strikes earlier in life, cutting people down in their 50s, 40s or even 30s. Over the past decade, researchers have linked two genes to Alzheimer’s, which explains for 10 percent of all cases. Last week, teams in Boston and Seattle identified a third crucial gene. ‘’The new discovery finishes an era.’’, says biologist David Galas of Seattle’s Darwin Molecular Corp. ‘’Our picture of the mechanisms of the disease is now largely complete.’’

Working with samples from families with histories of early Alzheimer’s, the scientists found that individuals who are suffers shared a specific mutation on chromosome 1, one of the 23 paired chromosomes found in every cell. ‘’Finding two similar gene that causes Alzheimer’s is the break we are waiting for.’’, says Dr. Gerard Schellenberg, who led the Seattle team. Though the genes relate most closely to Alzheimer’s, they should help illuminate all the types of the disease and speed the search for treatments.
